Pat Spence from Platt Bridge talks to John Reid about the preparations for a street party to celebrate the Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Recorded on the 29 July, 1981.

Audio description below:

How long have you been planning the party?

About two months.

And have you had any problems with organising the party?

No, not really, none at all.

No trouble with the council?

No, they’ve been very good, actually. Smashing.

How did you raise funds for the party?

Raffles mainly, and we got £2.50 off each person.

How many are involved there?

Children you mean?

Well, children or adults?

Well, it’s only for the children, so there was thirty seven children involved.

So, that’s thirty seven £2.50s?

Yes.

How long did it take you to prepare the meal?

Well, we’ve been buying things each week and that like; but there’s about eight of us, say about four hours.

What type of food are they having?

Sandwiches, sausage rolls, biscuits, cakes, chocolate biscuits, ice cream, jelly, pop, crisps, well sweets. You know, mainly what kids eat really, isn’t it.

Are you giving them any mementos?

We’ve bought them the Jubilee, not the Jubilee, the Charles and Diana crown.

How much did the meal cost?

Well, all in I reckon about a hundred pounds, you know. That’s everything, the hire of the tables, insurance on the street and that, you know. So, it’s not so bad.

Did you buy it anywhere special, this food?

No. We got some of it wholesale, you know. The ice cream and that, we got that wholesale. We went to Asda, I think.

What was the motivation behind having the party?

Just for the kids. Just a special day, something for the kids to remember I think really, you know, and the fact that we enjoy doing it really.

What entertainments have you provided?

Well, we were supposed to have an escapologist but I don’t know whether you read about it but he got burnt so he couldn’t come. So, they give us this other fella. He’s Punch and Judy and magic and that, you know. And he only cost us £35.

Are the kids enjoying it?

Mmm. They seem to be anyway.

Are the adults enjoying it?

I think it’s more for us then them actually, to tell you the truth. (Pat and John laugh)
