WMS Oral History Collection

In the 1980s, John Reid from the Wigan Museum Service recorded interviews with local people. These interviews covered many subjects including childhood, working life, as well as memories of important events such as the Second World War, the 1926 General Strike, and the Royal wedding of King Charles III and Lady Diana Spencer.

In 2022, the 'Unlocking Our Sound Heritage' project digitised 105 cassettes from this collection. You can read more about the project here Unlocking Our Sound Heritage Archives+, Manchester - The British Library (bl.uk)

Clips from some of these digital recordings extracts are available to listen to here. Audio transcriptions are published alongside the audio. If you are keen to hear or read more from the WMS Oral History collection please contact archives@wigan.gov.uk
