'We want to achieve more awareness around Youth Cabinet as a group…there is a lot of change that has happened within the Wigan and Leigh Borough which is partially due to Wigan Youth Cabinet but nobody knows we exist'

Youth Cabinet, 2022

In 1922 the Mayor and Mayoress of Leigh funded a trip to London for two children from each school in Leigh to give them the opportunity to visit the city at a young age. Each child was elected by ballot. They made a scrapbook of the trip to show how special and unique the occasion was. Today the scrapbook is housed and cared for by Archives: Wigan & Leigh.

In 2022 Youth Cabinet compared the scrapbook and the children’s experiences in 1922 with their own one hundred years later. Democracy, gender, diversity, are just some of the themes Youth Cabinet explored. The result is ‘Change Makers’ a co-curated Archives: Wigan & Leigh window display, film, and website.
