Leigh Fire Brigade with their first horse-drawn, steam operated fire engine, purchased around 1892 at a cost of £1000. The engine was capable of delivering 750 gallons of water per minute, in contrast to the manually operated engine which delivered 200 gallons per minute. Leigh Fire Brigade was formed in 1866 when its first fire engine was delivered, and operated by volunteers.
