This is a letter written to Mr Leigh during the time of the American War of Independence (1775-83) regarding the surrender of Rhode Island.

Dear Brother
News is just arrived that Rhode Island with all its towns and inhabitants have surrendered to
General Clinton, together with the [ - ] that is Admiral Hopkins and all his mighty fleet.
Notes
Sir Henry Clinton (1730-1795), Commander in Chief for North America, was sent to seize Rhode Island by General Howe in 1776-77 with 6000 men - this was accomplished without major resistance.
Admiral Hopkins was born in Rhode Island and was the Commander of the Rhode Island Military.
