Thomas Isherwood, Justice of the Peace, was twice Chairman of Hindley Urban District Council, in 1965-1966 and 1958-1959.
He also served as a Lancashire County Councillor.
He was Mayor of Wigan Borough between 1983-1984 and served as Chairman of the Wigan Council Finance Committee. He was married to Mrs Kitty Isherwood who served as Mayoress in 1983-1984.
Kitty Isherwood was awarded five medals for her service during the Second World War in caring for soldiers and casualties in North Africa and Italy, including Queen Alexandra's medal. Tom and Kitty met whilst she was sister in charge of the Ministry of Pensions Hospital in Worcester, after he was injured during active service with the Royal Artillery. They married in 1952 and Kitty Isherwood continued to work as a nurse at Wigan Infirmary She died in 1997.
Outside his service in local government, Thomas Isherwood retired in 1982 from a position as deputy legal officer with USDAW. He began work with as a union official with the Union of Shop Distributors and Allied Workers at the central office at Rusholme, Lancaster, in 1943.
Thomas Isherwood entered local government as a Councillor for Hindley Central Ward in 1948. He was on the governing body of Hindley and Abram Grammar School - where he attended as a child - and was a manager of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School, Hindley Green for four years.
At the close of Hindley Urban District Council, Thomas Isherwood served as Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
He served for a period during the Second World War with the Royal Artillery and was a keen bee-keeper in later life.
