James Taberner was born in 1898 in Pemberton, Wigan, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Taberner. He worked at Victoria Mine, Standish and Junction Mine, Bickershaw, reaching the position of Colliery Overman before his retirement in1963.
On Christmas Eve 1927 he married Annie, daughter of Joseph and Alice Bowdler, collier of Aspull. They had a daughter and two sons.
He served as a member of Aspull District Council for over twenty five years before retiring in 1974 when the Council was abolished under the reorganisation of Local Government. He was elected Chairman of the Council on three occasions – 1956, 1964 and 1972.
He was a prominent member of the Independent Methodist Church at New Springs where he was choirmaster and President of the New Springs Old Folks’ Association.
His wife died in 1980 at their home in Holmsfield Close, New Springs and James died four months later.
