Thomas Gray worked in the mines, the National Register of 1939 available on Find My Past, records him as an electric coal driller below ground. He married Mary Elizabeth Harwood in 1919 at Whelley Methodist Church. They lived in Bolney Street, New Springs and had three children, a daughter and twin sons.
Thomas was first elected unopposed to Aspull Urban District Council in 1955 for the Labour Party. He was elected Chair of the Council on two occasions – 1958 and 1966. Following his election in 1966 he attended the Civic Sunday service at Whelley Methodist Church. Accompanied by members and officers of the Council, representatives of local churches and organisations and led by Haigh Band they processed from Chapel Street to Whelley Methodist Church.
