An entertainer in ‘blackface’ at Wigan Carnival, circa 1950s. He is possibly performing in the minstrelsy tradition. Despite offensive content, Archives: Wigan & Leigh keeps this image publicly available to ensure that the history of racism in the borough is not erased.

Previous description reads:

“Crowds watch an entertainer at Wigan Carnival, circa 1950s. The photograph was taken at Market Place looking down Standishgate. A bus can be seen in the background.”
