Eckersley's Mill, Wigan in 1942. Mill girls queue up at the canteen for their tea break. Most of the girls in this picture, unusually for Wigan, are wearing shoes. Clogs were common footwear for mill girls well into the 1950s. "Your clogs were always two sizes too large when you first went into the mill" said one former mill girl "so you had to get your money's worth out of them."
