Market Street, Wigan, around 1906. Around this time, motorists were trying to dispel prejudices about the motor car. They wanted to show that they could be used for pleasure and enjoyment as well as by the army. The car in the distance is a Darracq, a popular French make at the time. In the back seat is General Booth, Head of the Salvation Army. In August 1906 he set off on a ‘Pilgrimage by Petrol’, stopping to preach in all major and some smaller towns.
