Samuel Melling with his iron 'velicopede' or 'boneshaker' bicycle. He built and rode the bicycle in 1864 when he was aged 18. It is probably one of the first of its type made in this country. Melling was a member of the Melling family which owned and managed Worsley Mesnes Ironworks and Ince Forge. The bicycle was made in 1864 when Melling was serving his apprenticeship at the latter firm. He was also a Justice of the Peace between 1909 and 1924.
