Old Higher Hall, Hindley Green, no date. Higher Hall was first built in the 13th century by Richard De Westleigh, but by the end of the century the male line had ended, and the hall passed by marriage to Richard De Urmston. It was the home of the Urmston family for 400 years but that line too died out in 1699, the hall was left to Richard Shuttleworth of Sandypool, who forfeited his estates because of his involvement in the Jacobite Rebellion. During the 19th Century the house was rebuilt by John Hodson Kersley, M.P. for Wigan, and was subsequently a Girls School and then the residence of James Diggle a local Mine owner. It, like Westleigh, fell victim to mining operations and was demolished due to damage caused by subsidence.
