Photograph of workers at the Wigan Rolling Mills, Wigan, 1891. The shingler stands to the right of the image; shingling or hammering balls of wrought iron to weld the particles before rolling expelled large quantities of molten cinder. The shingler required protective clothing to do his job, including sheet iron foot and shin guards, a heavy leather apron and a wire gauze face mask. William Wickham Collection.
