Ormerod Hook

Ormerod Hook

Edward Ormerod (1834-1894) was an engineer at Gibfield Colliery in Atherton. Witnessing multiple overwinds inspired him to patent his invention ‘The Ormerod Hook’ in 1868. This safety device prevents over winding of the rope by suspending the cage on the headgear.  When they were first tested, Ormerod insisted on being alone in the cage. The tests were a success so manufacture began in 1868. The business was lucrative allowing Edward to retire in 1874 at the age of 40, but unfortunately he died only 20 years later. He is buried in Atherton Cemetery where there is a nearby memorial.

By a strange coincidence the 1000th Ormerod hook was bought by Gibfield Colliery. In 1999, the hooks were still being used worldwide.
