Despite not having a University education and being of humble origin Mr Crompton was “destined to occupy positions of prominence and honour amongst his fellow men”.  A quote by Mr T Knowles, who also said – “Mr Crompton was endowed with a spirit of perseverance that overcame all difficulties, and by his industry he raised himself from the position of a servant to that of a large employer of labour”.

In fact Mr Crompton was a prominent figure in the coal trade, a leading colliery proprietor for many years (Messrs Crompton & Shawcross, Ince)

Mr Crompton was a member of

Ince Local Board (believed from formation until his death)

Wigan County Borough Council (Conservative representative) - Councillor for 15 years (Scholes Ward)

Wigan Bench of Magistrates; and was one of the guardians for the Township

Due to ill health, feeling unable to carry out his duties to the public offices, Mr Crompton submitted his letter of resignation to the Council.  This letter was read out at the Council meeting and accepted with deep regret with grateful recognition of the many services rendered by him.

His was the first funeral service held in the Ince Parish Church – which was consecrated in 1864.

Amongst many other friends and colleagues, a deputation from the Victoria Hotel Company, of which he was a director for many years paid respect.

Mr Crompton is buried in his family vault at Ince Cemetery, on the day of his burial a large crowd of working people employed at the collieries of the deceased and at other places were gathered at the graveside.
