1927-1928, William Hindley, Mayor of Leigh

William was born in Westleigh in 1871 and was educated at Westleigh St Paul’s School, on finishing school he started as an apprentice butcher to Mr George Hampson, then moving to Leigh Co-operative Society Butchering Department. From then he commenced on his own retiring at the age of 76 after 60 years in the trade.

In 1897 he was married to Mary and like her husband attended St Paul’s Church and Schools

In 1915 he was elected as a councillor in Hope Carr Ward. Was made alderman in 1919 and was Mayor in 1927.

He was a well known Conservative and a vice-president of Bedford Conservative Club.

After a lifetime of service to Scouting he was awarded the “Medal of Merit” a prestigious award within the Scout Movement.
