1973-1974, Peter Fazackerley, Mayor of Leigh

Peter Fazackerley was born in Atherton at Hatton Fold Farm in 1903, he was the last Mayor of the Borough of Leigh before local government reorganisation.

He was married to Nellie and they had three sons.

He was educated at St Michael’s and All Angels, Howe Bridge, and at Westleigh Methodist Infant School. At the age of 13 he started work at Carrington Mills as an office boy. The day began at seven in the morning and finished at six. He had a break at eight and an hour for lunch. Peter worked six days a week; from there he would attend Leigh Technical College for an evening class in commerce.

Due to the cotton slump which followed the First World War, he decided to change occupation and left the mill to join Lancashire United Transport as a conductor on the trams.

He was a staunch Liberal and studied the aims of the Liberal MPs whenever he could and was a life-long member of the Leigh Liberal Club.

He represented Lilford Ward from 1961 until he died in 1984, sitting on the health and cleansing committee, the estates committee and the crime prevention committee.

Peter’s hobbies included gardening especially growing vegetables and he was the Leigh representative for the South West Lancashire Gardens Council.

He died suddenly in hospital on Easter Sunday 1984.
