1929-1930, Novello Fairhurst, Mayor of Leigh

 

Novello Fairhurst was born in Wigan in 1872 but moved to Leigh with his parents at an early age, he went to Plank Lane United Methodist School then to Our Lady of the Rosary.

On leaving school he joined Ackers, Whitley and Co. Novello also worked at Abram Colliery and Carrington Mill as a carpenter.

He became a member of Leigh Council in May 1917 representing St Peter’s Ward and was made an alderman in 1927. During his time on the council he was Chair of the cleansing committee, as well as member of the maternity, welfare and school clinics, housing and town planning, health, rating, finance, estate and Parliamentary committees. Novello became a borough magistrate in August 1924 and maintained this for 25 years.

Novello was a trade unionist and chair of Leigh Co-op Society Education Committee. He was also a Governor of Leigh Grammar School, a past president of the Vehicle Builders, Wheelwrights, Carpenters and Mechanics Union, and he later became a member of the Woodworkers Union.

He married Miss Ditchfield of Leigh in 1900 and they had two sons and one daughter and they lived in Plank Lane.

Councillor Fairhurst died suddenly on the 6 January 1953 aged 81 and is buried in Leigh Cemetery in Plot 42, Letter J, Number 37.
