Photograph of Edward Ormerod's grave stone in Atherton Cemetery, Atherton no date. Edward Ormerod invented the Patent Safety Link in 1867 and the stone shows an example of the device. Ormerod was an engineer at Gibfield Colliery, Atherton, and the safety link a detaching hook for the prevention of accidents from over-winding in mine shafts. Manufacture commenced in 1868 from a small forge adjacent to the colliery and the first hook was installed at Gibfield No. 2 shaft in the same year. Edward Ormerod & Co. Ltd. manufacture detaching hooks and suspension gear in Atherton.
