Sir John Scott KCM, DCLC by John Henry Lorimer
John Scott was born on Standishgate. He pursued a career in law working in France, India and Egypt. Scott reformed the Egyptian legal system, removing the system of indentured labour that had been in existence since the Pharaohs. In 1893 he received the Freedom of Wigan and the following year became Sir John Scott. In 1924 his collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts were donated to the town. B15.10.
